Shoreline Lake Trail

Miles: 3.6 Miles

Time: 2 Hours

So this is weekend I began using an app on my phone called “MyTracks”. I like it a lot but since I’ve never used anything like it before I ended up forgetting to turn it off after this hike. When I finally did remember we had already started driving home. I looked at the total milage and it told me that I gone about 10 miles further than I had and that the last 6 miles were at speeds between 25 and 40 MPH. Now I’ve heard of trail running but THAT is ridiculous! Anyway, this was a great hike and I really did enjoy the extra information that the app provided. In the book it just states the highest climb as the elevation gain but MyTracks accounts for total feet climbed. So in the book it says it’s a hundred foot elevation gain but the app said we had done a total of 900 feet. This might be partially because of the drive but it still shows that 100 feet doesn’t always feel like 100 feet. All in all I liked both this hike and the app and will continue to keep using it.

This is our first successful shuttle hike. We started nice and early in the morning and were pleased that the weather was kind to us. This hike starts at the top and 10 miles later someone picks you up from the bottom for a total of 2200 feet elevation loss. The views were absolutely stunning. Even from as far inland as Ojai is we could see all the way out to the ocean. A clear view of the Channel Islands was seen for at least half the hike. Lake Casitas could also be seen clearly on this trail. We saw lots of bikers and runners on this trail especially those there with their dogs. The path is a wide well beaten fire trail, monotonous at times and somewhat hard on the legs. I think next time I do this hike it will be from the bottom to the top. I have a 3100 foot climb that will be my last hike and I will need to prepare!

I like showering after a hike. I feel like I earned it. My favorite part is scrubbing my ankles.

I am so happy the weather is starting to cool off! This hike was actually a mix of two “there and back” type hikes that meet at the same turn around point but come from opposite directions. So rather than doing one hike to the top then coming down and doing the other hike to the same point we went all the way through to the other end. It was a great hike! According to the book this hike should have taken six hours and that doesn’t include stops or breaks. We shaved a whole hour off this hike. However we were not completely unmotivated in doing so. When we got to the trailhead there was very clearly posted a sign that stated that the parking lot gate will be shut and locked at 4 pm. We got to the trailhead at about five after 10 leaving us less than the book’s allotted time for the hikes. We have finished with time to spare before but this would be cutting it close. We were on the trail by fifteen after and with a blazing speed. When we got back to our car it was 3:20; plenty of time to spare!

A Ventura County hiker with unreasonably elevated expectations. ~The Challenge! So since I am so obviously a glutton for punishment I decided to give myself a goal for hiking. I bought a book that includes maps and locations of 116 hikes and trails around Ventura County. My challenge is as follows: to complete every trail in the book before January 1st, 2012. This gives me 145 days to complete 116 hikes. Now this seems totally reasonable, right? Keep in mind I work full time and go to college at night. Also know that I will be out of the area for at least three weeks before the start of the new year. This means I will have to do more than a hike a day. But it is in my nature to bite off more than I can chew. Stay tuned for more action and adventure! ~About Me Let me introduce myself. My name is Lori and I am stationed in Port Hueneme, CA while serving in the U.S. Navy. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and, for those of you who are not familiar with California, living in Northern Cali is very different than it is here in Southern California. The weather is great but being only 45 minutes from Los Angeles the hustle and bustle of plastic surgery and Hollywood heartache has rubbed off on this once quiet farming community. After a neck injury prevented me from my usual workout regimenof running a few miles every day on the beach I found myself gaining weight. When looking for alternative exercises that were just as relaxing and peaceful as what I once took for granted, I found hiking. Literally a breath of fresh air compared to the smog that hovers above the L.A. area! The hills and trails surrounding Ventura County proved to be a much needed solace from the normal stressors of my life.
